Carl wanted the soundtrack to be "toneless" in his feature doc depicting the onset of the COVID pandemic. And as such, let the viewer sort 
of define his/her own emotional basal tone while watching the film, based on their own experience in the pandemic situation. 
Still, he felt he needed a pulse of sorts to drive the story forward and add dynamics. The solution was to create a fully percussive soundtrack. Carl built a drum set including some percussive elements and pretty much just played through the film. Unknowingly (or naively?), the result ended much more emotionally and tonally charged than expected.
